Sion-based start-up Evolium Technologies joins forces with three partners to collect used lithium batteries: Decathlon Sports Switzerland, Dott and Tandem Sports. When a bicycle or electric scooter battery is no longer efficient enough, Evolium Technologies collects it from its partners and reconditions it to give it a second life in electricity storage systems for renewable energies. <\/strong><\/p>\n When a battery is no longer efficient enough to be used for micromobility, it actually still has potential for another use: photovoltaic storage. To do so, the battery has to be disassembled into individual cells, which then have to be tested to check which ones can be reused. These tests are carried out by Evolium, which then reconstitutes modular, repairable batteries for photovoltaic storage. It’s this second-life use that awaits the batteries in the electric scooters and bikes returned by customers to Decathlon stores, Tandem stores – a company selling electric bikes based in the canton of Vaud – and Dott’s shared micromobility vehicles. <\/p>\n Coming soon to market<\/strong><\/p>\n Evolium’s second-life batteries will be launched soon, with the announcement of the first battery distributor in early April. Initially limited to one region, the start-up plans to expand its sales area over the course of the year. The development of new models is also planned. <\/p>\n A first collaboration with Decathlon on a pilot project<\/strong><\/p>\n Evolium and Decathlon initially collaborated on a pilot project supported by The Ark Foundation, to test the possibility of reusing lithium batteries from micromobility for renewable energy storage. The entire logistics chain was tested, from the recovery of micromobility batteries in Decathlon stores to the installation of the first functional second-life battery in Crans-Montana. <\/p>\n A new step towards a more circular economy<\/strong><\/p>\n From now on, battery cells from Decathlon, Tandem and Dott electric bikes and scooters will be reconditioned after their first use.
